A handful of events anchor Provincetown's calendar year after year, and people plan whole trips around them. Dates move a little from year to year, so double-check before you book, but here's roughly what to expect and when.

Carnival, mid-August

Carnival is the biggest week of the year here, hands down. It's a decades-old tradition built around a themed parade down Commercial Street, plus drag shows, dance parties, and events happening all over town for most of the week. It's also the hardest week to find a place to stay, so if you want to be here for it, book early.

Portuguese Festival, late June

This one goes back to Provincetown's roots as a fishing port. The Blessing of the Fleet is the centerpiece, along with live music, traditional food, and a procession through town honoring the Portuguese-American community. It's one of the oldest traditions still running here.

Provincetown International Film Festival, mid-June

Independent films, filmmaker panels, screenings scattered across venues in town. It draws an interesting mix of film-industry visitors and locals, and it's a good way to catch Provincetown in early summer before the July crowds show up.

Fall and the holidays

Once summer winds down, the calendar shifts toward smaller, community events: women's week and LGBTQ+ community week in the fall, then a holiday celebration in December that gives Commercial Street its own low-key version of the summer buzz.

A few things to keep in mind if you're timing a trip around one of these: book lodging early, especially for Carnival, since that's when availability disappears fastest. Confirm dates on the event's own page each year, since they shift. And if you'd rather skip the crowds entirely, the week right before or after a big event usually has the same good weather with a fraction of the people.

Whenever your trip lands, Hideaway Hill is a quiet home base just outside the busiest part of town. Check our Provincetown vacation rentals for availability.
