Visiting Provincetown with Your Dog: Beach Rules, Off-Leash Spots, and Where to Stay
Provincetown is a dog town. You'll see them on Commercial Street, on the bay at sunrise, and in the back of half the cars on Route 6. All four of our rentals take dogs, so we field a lot of questions about where dogs can go and when. The short answer is that it depends on who owns the ground you're standing on, the Town of Provincetown or the Cape Cod National Seashore, and the two have very different rules.
Can dogs be off-leash on Provincetown beaches?
Yes, on the town's own beaches (the bay side, along Commercial Street), during set morning and evening hours. Under the town's dog bylaw, dogs can be off-leash on town-owned beaches if they're under voice and sight control during these hours:
- Memorial Day through November 1: 6 to 9 a.m. and 6 to 9 p.m.
- November 2 through the day before Memorial Day: 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Outside those hours, dogs have to be leashed on the beach. "Voice and sight control" has a specific meaning in the bylaw: your dog stays where you can see it, doesn't charge or chase people or other dogs, and comes back right away when called. If that's not your dog yet, keep the leash on. Fines start at $25.
If you're coming in the next few weeks, note the date: after November 1 the off-leash window opens up to most of the day, which is one more reason the quiet season is a good time to bring a dog.
Are dogs allowed at Herring Cove and Race Point?
Yes, on a 6-foot leash, with some seasonal exceptions. Herring Cove, Race Point, and the rest of the ocean beaches around town are part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, and the park's rules apply there, not the town's. The main ones, per the National Park Service:
- Dogs must be on a leash no longer than 6 feet, everywhere, all the time.
- No pets on lifeguarded beaches in summer. You can walk a leashed dog through a guarded area to reach a section where dogs are allowed.
- Shorebird nesting areas are closed to pets from April 1 to October 15. In Provincetown that includes Hatches Harbor and the northwest end of Herring Cove (to the right of the parking lots as you face the water). Other closures move around day to day, so the signs at the beach entrance are what count.
- The Province Lands bike trail is off-limits to dogs from May 1 to October 31. Most Seashore walking trails don't allow dogs at all, but the fire roads do.
- Freshwater ponds are closed to pets from May 15 to October 15.
If you're not sure which beaches are open to dogs on a given day, the Seashore's information line is 508-255-3421. For more on the beaches themselves, see our guide to the beaches near Provincetown.
Is there a dog park in Provincetown?
Yes. Pilgrim Bark Park, at the corner of Shank Painter Road and Route 6, is the town's fenced dog park. It's open dawn to dusk, has a separate area for dogs 25 pounds and under, and is run as a nonprofit on private donations. The town's rules for it are worth reading before you go: dogs need to be licensed, vaccinated, wearing tags, and spayed or neutered, and you can bring no more than three at a time.
The bylaw also names a few town-owned open spaces where dogs can be off-leash under voice and sight control: Foss Woods, the Locke Property (better known as Whistle Path Woods), and the old railroad right-of-way.
A few town rules worth knowing
- Pick up after your dog on sidewalks, streets, beaches, and any town land. This one carries the steepest fine, $100 for a first offense.
- Don't leave a dog in a parked car in heat or cold. Police and animal control are allowed to remove it, and the fine starts at $100.
- Everywhere else in town, dogs should be leashed. The off-leash rules above are the exceptions.
- Animal control is reached through the Provincetown Police Department, 508-487-1212.
Staying at Hideaway Hill with a dog
Every one of our units welcomes dogs. The fee is $100 per dog, per week, and the limit depends on the rental:
- Gallery Apartment: up to 3 dogs, with its own enclosed dog run
- Barn: up to 2 dogs
- Cottage: 1 dog
- Studio: 1 dog
If you're traveling with more than one dog, the Gallery Apartment is the one to look at. Being able to open a door and let them out into a fenced run, without a leash or a walk, makes a real difference at 6 in the morning. We're open year-round. Get in touch with your dates and how many dogs are coming, and we'll tell you what's available.
